Aisha Tyler

After a very stressful day, I needed a little comedy to put me in a good mood. I got the perfect remedy in the form of Aisha Tyler’s No Ass At All music video. You might remember Aisha Tyler from Talk Soup on Comedy Central, or as the Black Woman on Friends. As tall and fine as she is she could have been a supermodel, but she’s a true comedian at heart.

In this video Aisha explores her trials and tribulations of being a Black Woman with no…. Junk in the Trunk. This video was shot to promote her comedy special Aisha Tyler Is Lit: Live at the Fillmore. In the words of Andre 3000 “God can you send me a lady… she don’t have to have a BIG ole Ass just something in proportion to her body”. Rock on Aisha Tyler!!!!

Nola Darling

It’s no secret that we support the Ladies Of Nola Darling here @ Luv4Art HQ. So I’m so glad to see the new video for “That Nola D”, a remix of the Black Eye Peas Boom Boom Pow. I’m gonna go out on a limb here, and say that this version smashes the BEP version.

I don’t know what our Film Editor Mr. Jean would say about the direction of this video, but I feel it has good energy, colors, and I love the sped up video effect. It’s like making something beautiful on a budget. More important the video does a good job promoting the vibe of Nola Darling. Great Work Ladies. Check out the video after the jump!!!

Colin Munroe

I must admit that I’m really late on this song. I heard this on Peter Rosenberg’s Real Late radio show the past two weeks, and the chorus and melody have been stuck in my brain ever since. All that to say… Colin Munroe’s Piano Lessons is my song of the moment!!!!

Colin Munroe is originally from Toronto Ontario Canada, and for someone that’s been up there on more than one occasion, I can say those Canadians are serious about their soulful music. It also helps that Toronto located right across the water from Detroit Michigan (Motown, J Dilla etc). So it’s only right that Colin Munroe would get the help out on this track, from Detroit’s brightest young producer Black Milk.

Piano lessons is off of Colin Munroe’s 2008 (told you I was late) mixtape The Unsung Hero, and also features Joel Ortiz. Colin Munroe is currently on tour with Wale. You can download The Unsung Hero Mixtape, and give some feedback.

Soul Power Movie

We have a funk soul theme going here on Luv4Art right now. This Soul Power documentary is something serious. During the historic Rumble in the Jungle fight in Zaire between Muhammed Ali and George Foreman (pre grill days). Don King assembled a group of Funk and Soul All Stars to perform a concert the week of the fight. This group of Funk/Soul Legends included Bill Withers, BB King, Sister Sledge, Miriam Makeba, Celia Cruz, The Spinners, The Crusaders and James Brown.

As you may have seen in When We Were Kings the fight was held up, and the performers had a choice to stay in Zaire to perform, or head back to the states. Lucky for us they chose to play the concert in Zaire. Soul Power tells the story of how it all went down.

Soul Power is like the musical B-side to When We Were Kings. I would go see Soul Power just to see the performances, but the untold stories and behind the scenes footage is just as interesting. This movie has made the rounds at Film Festivals and probably won’t hit the theaters until July. Check out the Trailer on the apple website, and some extra photos after the jump. If you don’t know your soul music history this would be a good way to school yourself. Keep Soul music alive people!!!

Dam Funk let's Take Off

You know we appreciate the talent and skill displayed by Dam Funk. This brother is taking it back to the melody and instrumentation missing in modern music. In my opinion the funk is about being spontaneous and creating on the fly. That’s seems to be the musical direction on Dam Funk’s new Stones Throw 12′ Let’s Take Off.

Sample the infectious grooves below, Hood Pass Intact is an example ofDam Funk’s signature modern boogie sound, makes you feel like your in an Ice Cube Video in the 90’s. While the uptempo LAtrifying at first seems like and ode to the purple one, but then it turns into a more nasty, complex rhythm… boogie heaven. For extra credit check out the video of Dam Funk cooking up some newness in the Funkmosphere Lab, after the jump. Keep the Funk alive my good people.

Marvin Gaye 75

I was raised on the music of Marvin Gaye… how many times have you heard various artists utter those words to show that Marvin has influenced their style? I was really raised on the music of Marvin,we had posters all over the house (my mother’s favorite artist til this day), my family even lived in LA at the time of Marvin tragic death. All that to say that Marvin Gaye’s music played a serious role in shaping my early musical tastes.

So on Marvin 75th birthday Motown has released a digital only release available on itunes Marvin Gaye “Then and Now” a collection of rarities for the serious Marvin Gaye fan.I’ve had a chance to check out Soulie an unreleased track reminiscent of early Marvin pure, soulful, sounds like sunshine. Another stand out song is the dance remix of I Want You by John Morales of M+M Productions, this is more of a stripped down version with emphasis on percussion… nice! You can check those out on itunes.

I’ve included some tracks from a Waajeed vs Marvin remix vinyl ep in celebration of Marvin Birthday enjoy!

Eternia

I tried to book Eternia for a show a couple of years ago to perform with Nemiss @ Joe’s Pub. Unfortunately she couldn’t make it back in time enough for the show (she was traveling from her hometown Toronto, Ontario), anyone who has had to cross the border coming from Canada knows what I’m talking about. Since then I’ve followed her career through her email updates and new music on her myspace page.

When she recently had a post about her experience opening for Necro (not so female friendly lyrics) some of Etrenia’s supporters questioned her judgment in performing on the same bill as Necro. But Eternia wins in the end, not only does she rock the show and win over Necro’s fans, but she has the video to prove it. Check out the video after the jump. You can also check out Eternia on the Girl’s Rights Tour w/ Masia One in Toronto Ontario. Check out her myspace page for more tour dates.

A Thousand Words

A Thousand Words

We LUV short films here @ Luv4Art HQ, so much so that I think we will be posting more works from independent filmmakers. This is a start in that direction. Here’s a film by Ted Chung that I caught on Vimeo called A Thousand Words. If you live in the city with a train system the scenario that takes place in this short is all to common. You see someone on the train looking right, exchange a few glances (you think this might be going some where) and before you know it they’re gone.

Well in A Thousand Words Ted Chung tells this story with good old fashion editing skills without the need of any dialogue. Ted Chung shows his skills by using simple editing cuts, and a little art direction to move the story along. Take a look and give us your opinion. Film clip after the jump.

Shafiq
“This is for the writers and all my beat heads” – Shafiq

You may know of Shafiq Husayn as 1/3 of the super production group Sa-Ra creative partners. Or you may know Shafiq as one of the architects behind Erykah Badu’s New Amerykah album (album of the year in my opinion).

On Frequency Clash Shafiq presents his brand of funky, junkyard rhythms that have become popular in the LA underground scene with artists like Flying Lotus. But what sets Shafiq apart from the rest of the pack, is the funk and soul elements he brings to the mix, where others prefer to go with the blips and beeps, video game sound. As Shafiq states on the SA-Ra album, this one is for the beat heads. He speaks to us in the language only we can understand… through the drum (machine).
